Summer offers a different rhythm and routine, but it hasn’t really slowed down. I look at the calendar and can’t believe how quickly summer is moving. I feel a bit of a panic as I look at the incomplete summer bucket list. How will we ever squeeze everything in?
The start of school is just a few weeks away, so we’re going to be more intentional about getting outdoors, exploring the area around us, and having some fun. Lucky for us, the Dayton region has plenty of places to visit for an easy day trip.
Even if you have families with children of various ages, there’s a lot to do around here, and you can find a little something for everyone. So, whether you’re up for learning about history, having some hands-on fun, or looking for an adventure, we’ve rounded up a handful of recommendations for day trips in Dayton.

1. National Museum of the U.S. Air Force
This world-renowned museum, located at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, is a must-see. Best of all, admission is free! Explore everything from the Wright brothers’ early aviation history to presidential aircraft, space exhibits, and military planes. You’ll want to plan to spend several hours here – there is SO much to see!
2. Boonshoft Museum of Discovery
The Boonshoft Museum of Discovery museum is perfect for families because it combines science, nature, and play under one roof. Kids can enjoy interactive exhibits, meet animals in the Discovery Zoo, catch a show in the planetarium, and explore hands-on STEM activities that make learning fun.
3. SunWatch Indian Village
SunWatch is the site of an 800-year old American Indian Village situated along the banks of the Great Miami River. Visitors can tour reconstructed homes, learn about the Fort Ancient culture, and discover how archaeology uncovered this fascinating piece of Ohio history. It’s a unique educational stop that’s right in our backyard!
4. Carillon Historical Park
If you want to experience the story of Dayton’s incredible innovations, Carillon Historical Park is the place to go. The 65-acre campus features historic buildings, vintage transportation, the Wright Brothers National Museum, and exhibits showcasing how Dayton helped shape modern aviation, industry, and technology. We’re convinced you’ll learn something new about our great city that you didn’t know before you visited.
5. Learning Tree Farm
Learning Tree Farm is a traditional, nature-based farm that engages visitors with hands-on experiences. This working farm allows families the chance to connect with nature through gardens, farm animals, hiking trails, and seasonal educational programs. This stop gives you a chance to slow down and enjoy Ohio’s rural beauty.
