Valentine's Day

Valentine’s Day is this week. When many of us think of this holiday, we automatically equate Valentine’s Day with romantic love. But Valentine’s Day doesn’t have to be just that. It’s also the perfect time to celebrate all the different types of love in our lives—the love for our spouses and significant others, of course, but also the love we have for our children and families, our parents, friends, coworkers, and neighbors.

In the rush of our busy lives, we don’t always take the time to let others know what they mean to us. We may forget the little extras—the small acts of kindness that can truly brighten someone’s day. Often, it’s those small, thoughtful gestures that make the biggest impact.

As Valentine’s Day approaches this Saturday, I encourage you to take time this week to do a small act of kindness for someone else.

Here are a few simple ideas to help pay that kindness forward:

  • Send a snail mail Valentine. Write a heartfelt note to a friend or family member and share something you appreciate about your relationship or what they mean to you. There’s nothing quite like receiving a handwritten note in the mail—it’s sure to brighten their day.
  • Do something kind for a neighbor. Offer to walk their dog during these frigid days, bring in their garbage cans, or check to see if they need anything when you’re running to the store. Maybe it’s as simple as sharing a plate of cookies.
  • Volunteer. There’s no better way to pay kindness forward than by lending a hand where it’s needed. That might look like volunteering at your child’s school, helping at a local church, serving a warm meal at a soup kitchen, or supporting a local food pantry. One small act of service can create a ripple effect of kindness.
  • Make someone’s day easier. Hold the door, help carry groceries, offer to babysit, or take a task off someone’s plate. These gestures don’t take much time—some take only seconds—but they can mean so much.
  • Pay it forward. Buy coffee for the person behind you in line, leave a larger-than-usual tip, or add extra change to a parking meter. These small acts of generosity often spark joy for both the giver and the receiver.

Valentine’s Day is also a perfect chance to pause and recognize the people who quietly make our days better—the ones who show up consistently, but we might not always acknowledge.
