This week we saw sunshine return and winter released its icy grip…at least for a bit. We’re also seeing more hours of daylight – a sign that winter won’t last forever.
If you’re ready to say goodbye to the cold and welcome warmer days, this Sunday may be a good indicator of what’s to come.
Sunday is Groundhog Day, when we rely on a rodent to help us predict the forecast.
You’re probably familiar with this fun tradition – if a groundhog emerges from its burrow on February 2 and sees its shadow, it will retreat to its den and winter will go on for six more weeks. However, if the groundhog emerges and does not see its shadow, spring will arrive early. Groundhog Day comes from a Pennsylvania Dutch superstition
Groundhog Day marks the midpoint between the shortest day of the year on the winter solstice and the spring equinox.
The first official Groundhog Day took place on February 2, 1887, in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania. After that, the event was moved to Gobbler’s Knob and it’s been happening here ever since.
Punxsutawney Phil is the famous groundhog who predicts the forecast – usually around 7:30 am on February 2. . While he’s the most famous groundhog, Phil isn’t the most accurate. According to Stormfax Weather Almanac, Phil’s predictions are only correct around 39% of the time.
Last year, early spring was predicted.
