Happy New Year! We are already two weeks into 2019. Have you made your resolutions yet? Have you broken yours yet? Or are you still thinking about what you hope to accomplish in the coming months?
I’m not doing a resolution this year. Why you wonder? Well, sometimes resolutions can seem daunting, especially if we don’t follow through 100% and slack off within the first few days, it seems easier to give up on them than try to stick with it.
This year, I’m making it a year of intention instead of a year of resolution. With the help of dictionary.com, I found the difference between the two.
Intention: (n) a thing intended; an aim or plan
Resolution: (n) a firm decision to do or not do something
My intention this year – my aim- is kindness. That’s it. Simply be more kind to everyone around me. Spread kindness where I can. I think in today’s world we could all use more kindness.
Big vs. little
By setting this intention, my plan for 2019 is to act kindly and speak kindly in my daily life. I don’t think we have to complete great big acts, either. I think being more intentional about kindness means incorporating little acts of it into our life everyday. Often it’s the little acts each day that make the biggest difference.
Hold the door open for the person coming into the store behind you.
Look people in the eye and smile when you’re out and about.
Say thank you to your server -and really mean it – at a restaurant.
Be polite to people in the checkout line at the grocery store.
Write and mail a note (a real note with a stamp and everything!) to a friend just because.
Leave a sweet note for your spouse to find in the morning.
Make your family’s favorite meal on a random weeknight.
Bring in the garbage can and recycle bin for an elderly neighbor.
These are just a few ideas to help spread kindness. Hopefully this will get you thinking of little ways you can positively impact someone’s day as we go through this new year. My hope is that these little acts become automatic for me.
Let us help
Here at Ashley’s Pastries, we’d like to help you help brighten the day for another. Swing by our bakery on your way to work and surprise a coworker with a donut. Perhaps you do it on a day when they have a big task to complete or a presentation to give, or perhaps you do it simply because it’s the start of a new week.
Pick up a few smiley face cookies and surprise your children with a special treat at lunchtime. We promise these cookies will get a smile out of them!
Take home some cupcakes for a special dessert just because it’s Wednesday.
As I mentioned before, being more kind this year isn’t always about the big acts. It’s the thought that counts – the thought that you did something nice for someone you care about…or perhaps even someone you don’t know very well.
This year, I’m going to spread more kindness. I hope you’ll join me, too. Here’s to a great 2019!
